Know the conditions

The route follows open murram (compacted gravel) roads across exposed savannah. Expect warm temperatures as the sun rises, dust from other runners, little shade and an elevation above sea level that can make breathing feel harder if you live at the coast. Early starts between 6:30 and 7:00 AM help, but plan for heat.

Build a base

For the 15 km, aim for three to four runs a week for at least 10-12 weeks, with one longer run building towards 12-14 km. For the 10 km and 5 km, three runs a week with gradual progression is enough. If you are new to running, mix walking and jogging and increase weekly distance by no more than about 10 percent.

Train on the surface

Run some sessions on gravel or trails to condition ankles and calves. Add hill repeats and strides to improve strength and form.

Heat and hydration

Pacing on the day

Start conservatively. A steady first third lets you finish strongly. Walk through water points if needed, and follow instructions from stewards and the medical team. Every runner must be medically fit; speak to a doctor if you have any concerns.
