Why Anti-Poaching Work Matters for the Serengeti Ecosystem

Illegal hunting threatens wildlife across the Serengeti. Here is how patrols, communities and runners are fighting back.

A world-famous ecosystem under pressure

The Serengeti ecosystem is one of the last great wildlife systems on Earth. Serengeti National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the wider landscape includes the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Ikorongo and Grumeti Game Reserves and community-managed wildlife areas such as Ikona WMA.

What is poaching?

Poaching is illegal hunting. In western Serengeti it often involves snares and bushmeat hunting, which can kill animals indiscriminately, including species that migrate across the ecosystem. Because animals do not recognise park boundaries, protection has to work across the whole landscape.

Why patrols matter

Rangers walk, drive and camp in difficult conditions to find snares, deter hunters and respond to incidents. They need dependable gear: torches, rain jackets, jungle boots, first-aid kits, GPS units, radios, backpacks, uniforms and vehicles. Training in wildlife behaviour and patrol skills multiplies the value of every item.

Communities are part of the solution

Village Game Scouts are community volunteers who help prevent illegal hunting and manage conflict between people and wildlife. When villages benefit from conservation, wildlife has more defenders.

How a run can help

The Serengeti Anti-Poaching Run turns kilometres into support. It educates the public, brings attention to the issue and directs a share of entry fees, after operating costs, towards equipment for rangers and scouts. You can also donate money or equipment directly on our donations page.
