The Great Migration in September: What to Expect Around the Race

September is prime time for northern Serengeti and Mara River action. Here is how to plan a safari around the race.

An endless journey

Each year well over a million wildebeest, along with large numbers of zebra and gazelle, travel in a circular route through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem following fresh grass and water. It is often called the greatest wildlife show on Earth.

Where are the herds in September?

Typically the herds are in the northern Serengeti around Kogatende and the Mara River during the dry season, and the famous river crossings are usually seen between roughly July and October. Animal movements follow rain, so exact positions vary from year to year and your guide will track them.

Combining safari and marathon

Our travel packages are timed for 10-13 September 2027 so you can search for herds and crossings and still be on the start line at Fort Ikoma on 12 September. Kogatende is the recommended airstrip for arrival on the northern itineraries.

Photography and viewing tips

  • Early mornings and late afternoons give the best light and activity.
  • Be patient at the river: herds can wait hours before crossing.
  • Bring a zoom lens and binoculars.
  • Stay quiet and never leave the vehicle except where your guide allows.

Plan ahead
